The History of locks

The minute human kind had found, created, or developed something that was regarded as worth saving, locks had been invented. Actually, the earliest lock known today was discovered by archeologists in an excavation near Nineveh and is estimated to be about 4,000 years old. This key was an early version of the tumbler lock which was later widely used in ancient Egypt and which have inspired many modern locks designs. This early version consisted of a bolt, a door fixture, and a key. The bolt had little holes drilled, or carved, into it. When locked, pins which were set in the door fixture, would fall into these holes, preventing the bolt from turning or from moving, thus rendering the door locked. When the proper key was inserted, these pins were lifted from within their holes in the fixture, freeing the bolt to move once again, and by doing so, unlocking the door. That's 4,000 years ago we're talking about!
It's believed that the craftsmen of England were the ones who had presented to the world the first lock made entirely out of metal. This is estimated to have been around the year 900.
One of the earlier nations that had used locks and keys quite sparsely was the Romans. Back then, it was customary that rich Roman men kept their precious belongings in locked boxes, while carrying the keys on their person.
One of the most substantial turning points in the history of locks has to do with the Industrial Revolution. This technological breakthrough allowed for the manufacturing of ever more sophisticated and complex locks.
