MATERIAL OF DOORS: Most garage doors are made from wood or steel. There are pros and cons to each of these:

Wood doors come in a variety of style options and can often be quite ornate and esthetic, being fashioned from stain grade, different species of wood and mimicking various eras of design. However, they can be quite expensive.

Steel doors, on the other hand, are almost always more economically friendly. This is probably why they are the most common type of garage door! Also, manufacturers tend to make several colors, which aids to their versatility and overall appeal. It is also possible to paint the doors if you want to make them match the color scheme of your home. There are three kinds of steel doors – single-layer, double-layer and triple-layer.

Single-layered are usually the cheapest, made from one sheet of galvanized steel. They can be made more secure with good quality locks or transponder key programmed alarm systems.

Double-layer steel doors have a galvanized steel outer layer, with an additional layer of polyurethane or polystyrene beneath; this backing is good for soundproofing and insulation.

Triple-layer steel doors are the most soundproof and insulated, being constructed from the same material as double-layers, with an additional galvanized skin on the inside to protect the backing later from damage. They are by far the most secure type of door, thanks to the additional layer of steel. They also come with thicker insulation for increased ‘R’ value (R is the measure of thermal resistance.
