Everything You Need To Know About Door Security

Burglary in the form of breaking the door to get inside a house is one of the most common and typical ways that have been attempted and resulted in successful burglaries.

According to the Chula Vista Residential Burglary Reduction Project, burglars often targeted doors that didn’t have deadbolts, and they did so with ease by just using screwdrivers or crowbars. Most doors that are in the market today break easily when a 100-pound force is applied to them. However, Consumer Reports Magazine has found that steel-edged wooden doors were much harder to break, requiring at least 7 strikes of a 100-pound force before it can split or break.

Many door manufacturers are offering all kinds of doors with various levels of strength and durability, but these are not enough if you really want to ensure that no one will be able to successfully get inside your house. Aside from having doors that have deadbolts installed all over your house, here are some other precautionary measures you can take so a burglar will be discouraged from attempting to make a break-in:

  • Have alarms installed so everyone inside the house (or your neighbors) will be immediately alerted when any of the doors around your house are opened. This will inevitably make it easier for you to catch the intruder.
  • When you’re going on vacation or everyone in your house won’t be around, make sure that a Burglar Deterrent CD or MP3 is playing. This mimics the sound of occupants moving inside the house, and would make a burglar think that the house is full of people—this would discourage him from attempting to break in.
  • Trim the shrubs in your garden and the hedges around your house so burglars won’t use them to hide in plain sight.
  • Have door chains installed on all your house doors so you can open your door slightly to see who’s outside while still remaining locked.
